September 11, 2025 Native Plants For PNW at Sunnyside Nursery
ANOTHER DAY AT SUNNYSIDE NURSERY
Fifteen of us met at the Park and Ride to savor the tasty goodies brought by Hostess Dodey O’Malley. Homemade biscotti and zucchini bread, mini cinnamon rolls and muffins and great tasting watermelon. Thank you Dodey.
We enjoyed a wonderful talk by Trevor on Pacific NW natives, of which he had many examples. Included were nativars, specific native plants that have been bred for a particular trait like brighter colors of flowers or growth habit, while retaining their native parentage. These are very popular at the nursery and in his garden.
He explained how nativars offer options in size compared to true natives therefore they work better in most gardens with limited space and the variety in color of flowers or stems is forever growing. He showed us several examples such as a huckleberry bush with bright red stems.
After the talk we got our wagons and took advantage of the 30% discount he gave us on everything they sell: pots, plants, trees, succulents, water fountains, birdbaths and all soils and fertilizers, and sprays and powders for disease control. Wow, what fun!
Thanks to Betty Dorotik for taking the pictures this month!
